Wondering if Tendons Ever Grow Back
So… do tendons every grow back? Is there hope of healing?
So I’ve done a ridiculous amount of research on the web and have become an obsessed puppy looking for information. In fact, I’ve become the most informed non-medical ignoramus around. I’m full of facts that contradict each other entirely, my head filled with studies that support opposing conclusions. So… the question: Do tendons ever grow back after the graft is taken?
I read on one site that the Patellar area “fills in” and that all heals and is normal. (http://www.orthoassociates.com/ACL_grafts.htm) Thus it would seem that a patella graft would be optimal since your patella tendon is whole once again and you don’t end up with hole between them. Another site seems to indicate that this doesn’t happen (http://www.genufix.com/acl_inform.htm) and it is manifestly clear that they are very biased in favor of the hamstring graft. There is also something called the “lizard tail phenomenon” where it is alleged that the hamstring will regenerate itself after 2 years to some degree—although there still is a likely weakening of the hamstring by about 10%, so they say.
All of them are at least consistent regarding allografts, that they have a risk of disease, not being as strong, and tissue rejection. This one appeals to be most because it is least invasive of my body but I haven’t found anyone that has had one. I was told a couple of funny recommendations such as whether I can choose whom I’d be getting my allograft from (if I so choose.)
I don’t know how to compare between them and it would seem that I’d be making a serious decision that could be catastrophic regardless of which type I eventually choose. I’m hating life right now. I mean you can make a mistake choosing a home but your own knee? Repercussions affect you every waking hour and every step you take… how does one choose?
