It’s the week of surgery and still have a busy week ahead of me. I did something incredibly dumb today that I feel that I must share. I went down to Tae Kwon Do to see how the new class was doing and got my black belt certificate… finally (as described later) and had prior decided to participate. That wasn’t dumb. I was taking things really easily and also not rotating on my bad leg. I’d perform side kicks and roundhouses with my bad leg since all the rotation would be on my good leg. For the “reverse” using my bad leg I’d simply perform a front kick. My patterns were a little sloppy but very impressive for not having done them in three months. Then again, I only did 8, the patterns through yellow belt. So what was so stupid?
Things got a little rough when one of the yellow belts was feeling his oats and decided to kick back during sparring. Being that I am a black belt and had just received my certificate that I earned in January (or was it March?), I decided to show off. I did a couple of spinning back kicks after roundhouses (with my bad leg but standing on my good one) to ensure the yellow that he knew his place.
Oh yes, I did connect. It’s a beautiful sound and feeling to hear your booties hitting the plastic vest of your opponent. Problem is that on one of the half dozen spinning back kicks I performed I realized on one of them just how important your ACL really is. Apparently I rotated just a tad too much and felt a twinge in my knee of pain that was a reminder for the rest of class. Practically paralyzed me but I kept going and didn’t do another back kick after that, spinning or not. Adrenaline kept me going but I’m hoping I didn’t tear my meniscus. What a moron you are, Michael.
The class is great and I really miss it. I’m going to have to take things very, very slow when I get back. I’m not taking that part too well either. OK, stop thinking about this. Have so much to do for tomorrow since I have a trip to Boston. Additionally, I realize how stupid it will be to see if I get back in time to play in our New York City Corporate Softball Championship game for our third straight appearance. I was told by the coach that I will likely not be playing no matter what, if not because of my injury then because of my being out of practice in comparison to the other dudes who will fill out the team. We have won two straight championships and yours truly had home runs in five straight games this season before going out with the torn ACL. What a major bummer and inconvenience. OK, I have way too much to do. I’m out of here for now.
