Now I Know I Need ACL Surgery!
Defining reminder of my current limitations being back on the ballfield.
OK… if I wasn’t convinced before I have been convinced now to go through with the surgery. Scares the hell out of me (rarely if every take aspirin) but need it. 4 weeks from date of tearing my ACL, still not full ROM but closer, little swelling, decided to go to the park and play lightly, just throwing as quarterback and “giving” at the line and counting to 7. Needed to get out of the house. Well, I hurt myself but not really my knee.
I was thrown a ball and had to jump to catch. Of course, I hopped on my good leg but while in the air apparently I twisted my leg to compensate on balance. I landed on my good leg but was in terrible pain in my bad knee. Apparently I twisted my leg in the air to compensate balance and it hurt like stabbing pain for a minute or so. All gone, no big deal, I will not do that again. But I did strain my hip/butt muscle from that motion and I’m sore and have a difficult time walking.
OK, I’m convinced. I have to do this. I can’t avoid it. Right now I’m leaning auto patella because many have said this is still the way to go if you can because of the bone to bone. I was told I might be a bit old for patella (cut off is nearing 40?) and hamstring has more risks involved, both placement and stretching. Am going to 1 last doctor who is at Lenox and supposedly superb. We’ll see what method he uses.
All of you are correct. A leopard doesn’t change his spots. I also realize I have to act my age and will try to do so. That doesn’t mean keep a cane handy but also means that I have to be aware of the fact that my body might not be as resilient as it used to be. I can still bike, do some martial arts (maybe), rollerblade, and softball (maybe) but will need to use some caution. If I ever play football again (doubtful) I will not sue cleats. Thanks all for the support.
