Michael’s recovery has come full circle and he is now “kicking ass” in the same enthusiastic (but more careful) manner as before ACL reconstruction for his knee.
So I was at Tae Kwon Do last week and feeling pretty good - it has been almost two years since my ACL reconstruction on my knee and just over two years since I blew it out. We have this exercise called “jumping kicks” where you take a few steps and leap and try to kick a tennis ball hanging from the ceiling about 6 feet or so off the ground. It’s a few inches above my head so I need some real lift to get me there.
Michael returns to Tae Kwon Do nine months out of ACL reconstructive surgery and learns the second degree black belt pattern.
Nine months out of ACL reconstructive surgery using an achilles allograft, I have effectively returned to softball (hitting a huge home run last week) and also am back at Tae Kwon Do classes, participating fully. I have also recently learned “Kumgang” - the pattern for second degree black belts and one which places challenging stress on the leg muscles that control balance. Fortunately, I have been performing far better than expected.
I find even more strength in my leg and return to my old apartment.
I woke up late this morning and after an hour of reading, had lunch with Mom. I walked down the hall from my room and up the stairs without the crutches (and definitely without that horrible brace.) We had much of the same as last night coupled with my favorite tea, Good Earth Original Flavor, which is fabulous. We talked for a while and before I knew it, 1:30 PM was already upon us.
No question I can walk without crutches...
Exciting day today when I realized that I could easily walk without crutches. Most of my challenge was in my lack of confidence and fear that I might screw something up internally by doing so—so I didn’t do much walking without the crutches! Still, these little victories can mean so much, especially since you are happy to see that you are progressing each day. I can only wonder what is in store for me in the future…
It’s Thanksgiving day and it affords me an extra day of rest...and I can walk!
Woke up at 7 AM after an incredibly deep slumber. Once again, the knee feels noticeably stronger today. Used the CPM for an extra hour or so while reading, already at 105 degrees!. Plan today was simple—sort through a box full of work papers until 12:30 when football started, enjoy the game, and then go to Thanskgiving dinner at friends of the family at 4:30. Well, the day went exactly was planned although I turned off the football pretty quickly because the Lions were barely trying to prevent Payton Manning from scoring and the score became lopsided very quickly resulting in an uncompetitive game.
I return to work for almost a full day!
My Dad wasn’t around today, having taken off to see my brother and my newly born nephew! This meant nobody around to drive me into the city and I had to take the subway to work. Since I had an 8:30 AM call, I had to leave at 7:30 and was glad that I did as I was fortunate to get a seat on the train. While the crutches might help, this is NY City and most people don’t care and I wouldn’t take a seat from an old person who felt that I could use the seat more… Fortunately all that was required after standing for about a minute was some older person being able to make enough room for me to sit down… thankfully. These young ‘uns… incredible. The worst part about the trip was the bulky knee brace which I had to put on under my baggy zipper pants because over the pants they will slide down regularly and become an obstruction to walking.
Again, getting stronger every day but I felt yesterday’s physical therapy!
So I packed my new laptop backpack to the gills (because I can) and I must have put on an extra 20 pounds on my back like the idiot warrior that I can be. Dad was leaving the country to visit my brother who just had his third boy. Fortunately the grandchildren divert my parents attention from the fact that their oldest child is still single (and let me tell you, they remind of it regularly.) Dad drops me off at the subway station and I decide to grab a quick milkshake before I go into the city to go to work and for physical therapy. You have no idea what kind of a challenge it is to handle a milkshake (which I “wrapped” in a plastic bag and hung from my wrist) so I had to be innovative. Had an easy ride to work…
Serious physical therapy, travel, stairs, and transportation… can my new knee endure?
Woke up early today and knew that I wouldn’t be going into work early. Was just far too exhausted from the night before and felt like I needed the extra rest. I did get up in time to make my early business development team calls. Dad bought be an everything bagel with cream cheese and a black coffee with milk. Barely had a chance to eat it since I went fast and furious at my business emails that I needed to get out. While on the phone waiting for my 11 AM business development conference call, I hop into the car at 10:50 where my Dad is waiting to drive me into the city for my 11:30 AM physical therapy appointment. I didn’t realize that my day had only been beginning…
Day three after surgery yields mixed results but ends on a high note...
So being at the parents has its advantages. I got rid of my cable a year ago (who has time to watch?) The folks have satellite TV (because they wanted yours truly to be comfortable) and we all know that Sunday will be NFL football day with games at 1, 4 and 8:30. Sublime. But I didn’t expect to be up at 4:30 AM with a pounding pain in my leg, primarily at the site of the main incision where the stapes are located. I think quickly while I’m writhing in pain and realize that I haven’t iced down in quite a while. I make my way upstairs to get those blue icy gel packs and then apply to the source and wrap in a bandage. I get downstairs, place leg in CPM and wait…
The second day after surgery is even better than the first day...
I wake up very early in the morning, around 4:30am. The numbness has now left my left leg entirely and has been replaced with a dull ache right in the bone. OK, it’s time to use some of those pain killers I promised I wouldn’t and that I replaced with tylenol last night on the recommendation of my cousin. She is a doctor who told me that the hydrocodone could become addictive and a reliance as well as a source of nausea. This time, however, I needed it. Was awake for a short period and then passed out.
