It’s the day after ACL reconstructive knee surgery… I’m feeling pretty well!”
So I wake up the following day and I’m feeling quite well! I think it probably has a lot to do with the fact that my left leg is still entirely numb! I feel MUCH better than I thought I would and today I scramble to my physical therapy appointment that I am supposed to have at 11:30. But first, the visit from the man arriving with my “IceMan" ice machine and CPM—Continuous Passive Motion machine. Believe it or not, the former sells for $275 and the latter for $3,000. It seems my wonderful friends I called allowed me to purchase the ice machine for a few bucks above retail should I choose or pay rounghly 67% of their cost (if not more) to rent it. Heck, I heard that the rather bulky and seemingly cheaply made Breg knee brace that I got cost over $600 on my insurance yet it seems to retail for $270. I’ll have to check this out when I have the time. I have decided that this is a serious business/racket. I will begin leaving my job to hawk medical products. Enough commentary, now it’s time to begin recovery which can be coined by the term “RICE” (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.)
Waking up right after ACL reconstructive surgery...
Woke up. Whoa. I’m a little funky here, feeling like I have some dizzy pounding going on in my head although I’m relatively coherenet. Supposedly I’m the fastest to wake up and feel reasonably good after surgery today, as opposed to the guy who had to stay in for seven hours! I didn’t tell you that in part one because I didn’t want to scare you, lol.
The big day has finally arrived and I have my ACL Reconstructive surgery...
I wake up and realize that in just a few hours I need to leave. I’m a little apprehensive but otherwise glad that this day has finally arrived and I can move on with my life. I drag down four flights of stairs, get this, a 28 pound briefcase (that has my laptop and wheels on the bottom), a ridiculously heavy wheeled-hard shell suit bag filled with clothing, paper and electronics, and a box filled with paper that I need to sort through. I’m not sure that I really make it to the bottom in one piece but actually rather proud of my accomplishments! Do I really need this surgery? Well, given my little painful incident at Tae Kwon Do on Monday you better believe I’m not going to back out now both due to the physical limitations I obvious suffer from as well as not being a pathetic quitter at the moment of challenge!
Only 12 hours until I leave the house to go to surgery for my ACL reconstruction for my left knee...
Should I stay at my parents place the night before surgery and have them drive me to the hospital. Let’s see… I’ll be at my parents for several days and I’ll be questioning my sanity after a few hours of that, lol. OK, we’ll stay at my apartment for one last night and make sure I have everything packed! Check out Mike’s Knee Surgery Laundry List - Survival Guide which I created and used pre-surgery! It’s late now… 9:30 PM. It seems that my decision is made. I’ll stay at my place for tonight. Probably best that way as Mom will be all panicked if I’m around and tomorrow they will all lose it to make sure we are in the city in time…
Twas the day before surgery and all through the house...
It is the day before surgery and a number of things must be accomplished. Surprisingly, I didn’t get a time for surgery and was given a number at Lenox Hill hospital to call to find out when I would be slotted. This may or may not be the case with most hospitals but I’m told this isn’t unusual. I ended up playing tag with their machine, leaving messages, until I gave them permission to just leave the information on my voice mail, which they did. I’m not sure if it was in response to my message or their need to ensure I received their message because we hadn’t spoken and it was already noon!
Three days to go and will go with Dr. Kelly’s advice...
So I had a full day in Boston meeting with clients. Nervous as all get up about the fact that in three days I’ll be having my first truly major surgery which could affect the way I play ball, walk, and my quality of life for the rest of my life. Dr. Kelly did get back to me just moments after I had met with a client and I tried him just 10 minutes before I was to meet with a client… fortunately I arrived early to 1 International Place and called him from the lobby.
It’s three days before surgery...
It’s the week of surgery and still have a busy week ahead of me. I did something incredibly dumb today that I feel that I must share. I went down to Tae Kwon Do to see how the new class was doing and got my black belt certificate… finally (as described later) and had prior decided to participate. That wasn’t dumb. I was taking things really easily and also not rotating on my bad leg. I’d perform side kicks and roundhouses with my bad leg since all the rotation would be on my good leg. For the “reverse” using my bad leg I’d simply perform a front kick. My patterns were a little sloppy but very impressive for not having done them in three months. Then again, I only did 8, the patterns through yellow belt. So what was so stupid?
A list of what every knee patient needs to know and have before going into surgery for an ACL reconstruction...
Laugh if you want now because later you’ll be wishing you had considered this exhaustive laundry list of items you should think about before you go into knee surgery, especially if it’s for your ACL reconstruction like moi. I spent a while with some of the people on Bob’s Knee Board compiling the list of items that one should consider before having ACL surgery. To begin, it is advisable to be accompanied by people/friends/family if you can for the first three days or so until all the numbness wears off your newfound state of pain, as it may apply. Regardless of whether you are fortunate to have the company, here is the list, along with comments. Happy hunting!
It’s one week before the big ACL reconstruction...
OK. The day is arriving rapidly. If work hadn’t kept me insanely busy the past few weeks probably would have felt like an eternity. But now d-day is rapidly approaching and I feel like I haven’t had enough time to ask my OS, Dr. Michael A. Kelly, about which surgery to get. I’m nervous about choosing the allograft over the autograft. Should I even go through with this surgery since I feel like I’m starting to get my strength back…
Professional baseball player, Lance Berkman, tears his ACL.
Houston Astros outfielder, Lance Berkman, will likely miss the start of the 2005 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while playing flag football during a church related function. Berkman will have surgery during the following 10 days and is expected to have a five to six month rehabilitation period.
Berkman is a three time NL All Star and hit .316 this season with 30 homers and 106 RBIs. He made his major league debut in 1999, has a .303 career average with 156 homers and 535 RBIs.
